For two decades, TruBuilt Builders has been crafting luxury homes and remodeling spaces across Western Michigan—homes defined by artistry, precision, and a deep commitment to their clients’ dreams. As the company celebrates its 20th anniversary, founder Herman Hanko reflects on the journey, the challenges weathered, and the values that continue to guide TruBuilt forward.

Weathering Storms, Building Strength
When asked what stands out most from 20 years of building, Herman doesn’t hesitate.
“We’ve seen a lot—2008’s downturn, the pandemic, unprecedented inflation,” he says. “Through it all, we’ve remained a strong pillar in the community for high-end custom home building. It’s all about resilience and a no-quit attitude. Giving up just isn’t in our playbook.”
That resilience—showing up every day, no matter the circumstances—has become the foundation of TruBuilt’s reputation. Each challenge has refined the company’s focus and strengthened its mission: to deliver a world-class experience for clients who dream big and expect nothing short of excellence.
A Vision That Keeps Evolving
From the beginning, Herman’s vision for TruBuilt was clear: to build luxury, custom homes that stood apart. Over the years, that vision has grown even more refined.
“We’ve always aimed for the higher-end market,” Herman explains. “Now we’re taking that next step—partnering with architects and designers to create executive-level homes that truly elevate what’s possible.”
Luxury, for TruBuilt, isn’t just about finishes or square footage—it’s about experience.
“We provide what I’d call concierge service,” Herman says. “A very personal approach, where the homeowner feels taken care of every step of the way. You dream it, we can do it.”

The Pursuit of Better
Herman’s drive for growth is as strong as ever. “We never want to get stale,” he says. “We’re always pushing ourselves to do bigger, better, cooler things.”
That spirit of innovation shows up everywhere—from design and materials to the use of new technologies like AI to streamline processes and enhance communication with clients. “Technology helps us stay competitive, but more importantly, it helps our customers,” Herman adds.
Design that Blends Detail and Personality
When asked what sets TruBuilt apart, Herman emphasizes the company’s attention to detail—even the ones you don’t see.
“Every element, even behind the walls, matters,” he explains. “We take a design-build approach that blends today’s design trends with each client’s personal style. Having our own interior designers in-house allows us to bring that vision to life seamlessly.”
It’s a process built on collaboration. From designers to carpenters, every team member shares the same standard of excellence. “It takes a village,” Herman says. “Everyone has to be strong in their role for the system to work.”

A Team That Builds Trust
Clients often remark that one of the things they love most about TruBuilt is seeing familiar faces on their job site.
“They like that so many of our own people—our carpenters, our project managers, our designers—are in-house,” Herman says. “It’s not just subcontractors coming and going. They see our own team taking ownership.”
That team has grown to about 40 people, and with that growth has come new focus. “The product is only part of it,” Herman explains. “The process and systems are just as important. We’ve spent the last few years firming up our foundation to maintain consistent quality as we grow.”
Community Roots, Local Pride
Beyond the homes they build, TruBuilt’s roots in Western Michigan run deep. Herman himself is a volunteer firefighter, and the company regularly gives back to local schools and community events.
“Being a business owner allows me to stay connected,” he says. “This community has supported us for 20 years, and giving back is the least we can do.”
TruBuilt has completed projects across West Michigan, particularly in executive and gated communities where craftsmanship and detail are highly valued. But no matter the zip code, every home begins the same way—with a relationship built on trust and collaboration.
Building Dreams, One Home at a Time
For Herman, the most rewarding part of his work is simple: “It’s working with people—helping them take a dream and make it real. Seeing their excitement and confidence in our team, that’s what makes it all worth it.”
As TruBuilt Builders celebrates 20 years, the milestone isn’t just a marker of longevity—it’s a testament to the company’s unwavering commitment to quality, its people, and the homeowners who trust them to bring their vision to life.
“We’ve weathered a lot of storms,” Herman reflects. “But we’ve grown stronger because of them. And now, we’re setting the stage for the next level.”
For those dreaming of their forever home, Herman offers one simple piece of advice:
“Give yourself time. Start early, plan well, and collect ideas along the way. Building a home is a journey—and when it’s done right, it’s one of life’s greatest rewards.”
