When you walk into a TruBuilt Builders home, you can feel it — the craftsmanship, the care, the integrity behind every detail. That legacy begins with Herman Hanko, Founder and CEO of TruBuilt Builders, who turned his passion for building into one of Western Michigan’s most trusted luxury home companies.
From Carpenter’s Grandson to Visionary Builder
TruBuilt Builders was founded by Herman Hanko in 2006, but the story begins long before that. A craftsman at heart and the grandson of a master carpenter at Howard Miller, Herman grew up with a deep respect for building things that last.
He began his career in the trades as a framer, learning the fundamentals of construction from the ground up. What started as a small framing company soon evolved into something greater — a mission to build not just houses, but homes tailored to the lives within them.
“We’ve always aimed for the higher end of the market,” Herman says. “But what makes our homes special isn’t just the luxury — it’s the personal touch. We take a concierge approach, walking alongside homeowners every step of the way.”
Weathering Every Storm
Over the past two decades, TruBuilt Builders has grown into a leader in luxury custom homes, thoughtful remodels, and executive estates. But that journey hasn’t been without challenges.
“We’ve seen it all — the 2008 recession, the pandemic, inflation,” Herman recalls. “Through it all, we’ve remained a strong pillar in the community. Resilience and a no-quit attitude define who we are.”
That perseverance became the foundation of TruBuilt’s reputation — one built on consistency, craftsmanship, and trust.
A Leader with Hands-On Values
Even as TruBuilt has expanded, Herman has never lost touch with the details that make great homes truly great. His hands-on leadership style ensures every design, material choice, and finish reflects TruBuilt’s high standards.
“We don’t ever want to get stale,” Herman says. “We keep pushing ourselves to do bigger, better, cooler things — always improving our process and what we deliver.”
That commitment extends beyond aesthetics. Herman has built a team of over 40 in-house professionals — from designers and project managers to carpenters — creating a seamless, design-build experience that clients love.
“Our clients appreciate seeing familiar faces on their job site,” he explains. “They know our team takes ownership in the work. It’s not just subcontractors — it’s our people.”
Building with Purpose and Integrity
For Herman, building a home is about more than walls and windows — it’s about partnership, trust, and pride in every project.
“Luxury, to me, is about providing a great experience,” he says. “You dream it, we can do it. That’s the promise.”
TruBuilt’s focus on craftsmanship, communication, and innovation — including adopting new technologies like AI and modern building systems — ensures every home is as functional as it is beautiful.
Rooted in Community
Outside the job site, Herman’s leadership extends into the community he loves. He serves as a volunteer firefighter and sits on the advisory board for the Ottawa County Career Tech Center’s Building and Trades Department, mentoring the next generation of builders.
“Being part of this community means giving back,” Herman says. “Whether it’s helping students find their path in the trades or supporting local events, it’s all connected.”
A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Care
After nearly 20 years, Herman’s vision for TruBuilt Builders remains clear: build with purpose, integrity, and craftsmanship that lasts. The company continues to raise the bar for custom homes in Western Michigan, blending timeless design with modern innovation.
“We’ve weathered a lot of storms,” Herman reflects. “But we’ve grown stronger because of them. Our legacy isn’t just the homes we’ve built — it’s the people we’ve built them for.”
